About Ruth
I have called myself an accidental tourist as I have discovered many journeys because of external influences. I can say the same is true of how I have come to materials and expression in art. At the completion of three years of figurative formal training at the American Academy of Art, I became convinced to try processes of intaglio print-making. I enjoyed the exploring but I wasn’t committed until I returned from a second sojourn in France.
There I had spent much time in a small town in the atelier of a sculptor. On returning home I joined a friend in a monotype class. That is painting on a surface such as plastic, wood or metal and transferring it to dampened paper usually via a press. As I learned to freely investigate pure abstraction, exploring line, shape, and color, with only music as inspiration, I truly fell in love. Later, I played by adding additional marks and color, creating mixed media works.
